From the very beginning the company was called KyungSung Precision Industry. The main specialization of it was creating vehicles for personal usage. During that period of time in the southern part of Seoul spare parts for bicycles were produced. Later on the 5th of May 1944 a Korean company was born and it was called Kia. The first two letters stand for “arise to a whole world” and “A” stands for Asia. Here comes the meaning of the name of the brand – to arise from Asia to the whole world. In 1946 the active working process of the company resulted in the first bicycle Samcholli-Ho. This was a real success for Korean company as during that period of time Korea was considered to be one of the poorest countries in Asia.

In 1979 Kia started to produce autos which were equipped with diesel engines. The company also got the right to manufacture Peugeot 604 and Fiat 132 for the inner market. At the beginning of the 1980-s a severe crisis took place. The owners of the company couldn't cope with such situation. It was decided to hire a stuff of professional managers. Such tactics gave company a new boost in its development. Production of four models which were manufactured during that period of time was closed. A series of new commercial autos was launched. These autos were called Bongo. The series included light trucks, minivans and pick-ups mainly for farmers. In 1983 another truck appeared in order to widen production line. It was called Ceres and in 1987 a cheap and available model named Pride was presented to the public (it was constructed on the base of Mazda 121).
Later Kia decided to create several research centers. One of them was located in Japan. This resulted in extension of production line. A new model Concord was launched. It was equipped with gas engine Capital 1.5 l. In 1988 Kia produced its million's auto and reached stable position in the field of commercial transport. Soon such models as Rhino, Trade and Besta appeared on the market. By the end of 90-s financial position of the company eventually became stable. Kia was aimed on the European market.
